Direct Typing in ANY windows application  (Hotkey - F10)
If you are using Windows XP or Win 2000, you can type in Unicode Tamil (the universal standard for now and future) wherein Microsoft's font 'Latha' will be automatically used instead of SaiIndira. To know how to type in Unicode, click here. If you do not want to type in Unicode Tamil or if you are using Win 9x/Me or if your  application  does not support unicode, then you may proceed to read the following. Otherwise, you need not read further.

1.   Start Azhagi fully by clicking 'OK' on the opening password screen.
2.   Open your external application (say MS-Word).
3.   Change font to SaiIndira.
4.   Press F10 (default hotkey). Azhagi's tray icon will (should) change color to red.
5.   Start typing in English and see that appearing in Tamil.
6.   Press F10 again and you can start typing in English as usual.
7.   If you wish to change your typing mode from 'Phonetic' to 'Tamil Typewriter' or 'Tamilnet99', right click on Azhagi's icon in the system tray, move your mouse to 'Typing mode' and select the preferred layout.

Note on MS-Word :
If some characters like 'Sri' do not appear properly and you see only the quote character in place of 'Sri', then click on 'Tools - > Auto Correct (Options)'. A screen as below (it may vary in appearance according to the Office version you have) will appear.

graphic

As you notice,  the second tab (AutoFormat As You Type) has been clicked and one of the options has been unchecked which is ["Straight quotes" with "smart quotes"]. If this is done, then 'Sri' will appear properly as you type. This is the solution specifically for 'Sri'. But, later with some other character also, you might face some problem. So, you can untick all the options under all the tabs, if you wish to. Or, you can do them only if necessary, if at all you face any more problem with any more character. Sri is the most commonly faced problem though.

Note on PowerPoint :
A similar setting and procedure as above has to be done, in case you face problems with some characters like 'Sri'

Note on Excel :
A similar setting and procedure as in the case of MS-Word above has to be done, in case you face problems with some characters like 'Sri'

Note on Outlook Express :
It is always better to set your default composing font to SaiIndira. You do that by clicking 'Tools->Options-Compose-FontSettings' and choosing 'SaiIndira' in the font list and pressing 'OK'.

Useful Tips :
1.   You can press Ctrl-F10 to set the font  to SaiIndra automatically in certain applications. No need to select it everytime from the font list.
2.   Ms-Word provides a facility to generate superscripts and subscripts (Ctrl + Shift + = and Ctrl + = resp.). So, using Azhagi's Non-Transparent 'Direct Typing' mode, you can generate superscripts and subscripts in Tamil easily in Ms-Word.
3.   It is possible to effect 'Search and Replace' for Tamil text in an external application too.
4.   Taking Ms-Word as the example application, just click on 'Edit->Find'. Then, placing your cursor in the 'Find What' text area, press 'F10' to get into 'Direct Typing' mode. Type your Tamil text to search for. What you will see as you type your Tamil text is odd characters but they will be interpreted internally by Ms-Word as Tamil text and hence when you press on 'Find Next', the corresponding Tamil word will be highlighted in your document. This is a very useful technique by which you can effect 'Find and Replace' in Tamil in any Windows application which provides the 'Find and Replace' facility.

Set SaiIndira font for any application
You can use Ctrl-F10 to set the font for the text area of your current application to SaiIndra Tamil font. This may not set the font to SaiIndra in all applications (for ex : Notepad). In such cases, set  the application's default font to SaiIndra. Dont ask us how to do the same !!!

In cases where the application window does not allow you to set the default font to SaiIndra (for ex: Hotmail's or Yahoo's email message area), open a Tamil document in SaiIndra font in MS-Word.  Just copy a single Tamil letter or Tamil word from that MS-Word document on to Hotmail's or Yahoo's message area and the font will be set to SaiIndra. Thereafter, you can press 'F10' and start typing your Tamil text as usual.

Titles and Options Setter
The options set here have no effect when you are doing Unicode Typing since Extended Editing or Extended Mode is never used (as of now) during Unicode Typing. Note that if  you are using Windows XP or Win 2000, you can type in Unicode Tamil (the universal standard for now and future). To know how to type in Unicode, click here

You use this Editor to indicate whether Extended Mode and/or Extended Editing should be used for a particular application or not. The screen provides an easy interface through which you can specify an application's title (**), description (optional) and the modes in which you would like to operate that application during 'Direct Typing'. Please remember to click on 'Modify' or 'Save the Changes' button after making your choices.
(**) By application title, what is meant is the unique text which you see for each application at the top bar of the window. For ex: If you open 'Notepad' application, it will always have the text 'Notepad' in its title bar. So, this is the title for 'Notepad'. As one other example, if you open MS-Word, then it will always have the text 'Microsoft Word' in its title bar.

Transparen t Mode (Hotkey - F8 for 'setting' and F10 for 'processing')
Transparent mode of 'Direct typing' is provided for users who find it very useful to have the English text co-existing. Otherwise, one can always use Non-transparent mode of 'Direct Typing'  to effect immediate transliteration in ALL Windows applications. So, if you are not interested in your English text co-existing, you need not read further.

Well, to effect Transparent mode of 'Direct Typing', this menu item must be kept ticked (u can press F8 to do this automatically) and you can directly type your English text in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, compose areas of Outlook Express, Yahoo, Hotmail and Notepad & Wordpad too.

The procedure is as follows :- You keep typing your transliterated English text in the typing/editing areas  of any of the abovesaid  applications and as and when needed, press F10 (while you are in the editing area) :
As soon as you press F10, Azhagi asks you to confirm whether you really intended to do the processing on a window with that particular title. Once you confirm and press the hotkey(s) anytime again, the English text you typed is processed and the phonetic Tamil equivalent is displayed just below the English text. There will be a line separating the English text portion and the Tamil text portion in all applications except Excel. In Excel, actually you will be moving to a cell, type your transliterated English there and press 'F10'. Text in the cell will get transformed into the original English text, followed by a blank and the equivalent Tamil text.

Note on Outlook Express, Yahoo, Hotmail :
1.   Formatting at the start of your message may lead to that formatting being carried over to all parts of the Tamil text.
2.   More often, blank lines might get converted into single lines after processing.
3.   As regards Outlook Express, if processing does not take place, try not to give any subject for your mail so that the window title remains as 'New Message'. The window title will remain as 'New Message' as long as your 'subject' area is blank.

Note on Excel :
1.   If after processing, Tamil text does not appear and only junk characters, please select all the data cells and apply 'SaiIndira' font. In fact, you may apply SaiIndira font for all the cells before-hand itself and then initiate the processing by Azhagi.
2.    Processing takes place for a specific cell (where the cursor is placed) only.
3.   Different formatting for each word of a cell in Excel may not be sustained after processing. Single formatting (say 'Bold') for all words in a cell will be sustained after processing.

Other General Notes on "Transparent" 'Direct Typing':
1.   Once you press F10, you should not shift focus to some other application window when processing for conversion from English to Tamil takes place.

2.   In Transparent mode, you will have to do the formatting (basic formatting like bold, italic, underline only) in the English text and this formatting will get reflected in the Tamil text after processing.

3.   Azhagi always asks for a confirmation before it starts processing based on a particular  window title. Its you who have to take care that you are pressing the 'Yes' key in the right window, when confirmation is asked. If not taken care and if the document is an important one, processing will take place and it might result in undesirable results. The only option left would be to undo the effect by pressing Ctrl-Z.

4.   Since window titles containing words like 'Notepad', 'Wordpad',  'Powerpoint', 'New Message', 'Excel' etc. have special meaning to transparent mode of Direct Typing in Azhagi, dont give these words as names for your document files.

5.   At any particular point of time, only one application window's text can be processed for transliteration by Azhagi during 'Transparent mode' of direct typing.

6.   'Transparent' chat mode option and 'Transparent' Direct Typing option are mutually exclusive. When one option is on, the other option will be off and vice-versa.

Word Count (Normal)
Similar to what you see in Ms-Word

Word Count (Thamizh)
Same as above except that character count is given considering the fact that Thamizh has letters made up of more than one character like ‘ko’, ‘se’, ‘vai’ etc. Whenever such letters are encountered, they will be considered as a single character for counting purpose.
Word Count (Selected)
Same as above except that character count is given for selected text.

Reverse Transliteration
It is a sophisticated reverse transliterator by which the exact English phonetic equivalent can be generated for the Tamil text (created using any of the typing modes). It is done in two steps. First, Azhagi generates an almost matching phonetic equivalent in English. Therafter, you replace the dual sound syllables with the correct ones. Azhagi provides you a neat facility to do this effortlessly.

Auto-Insertion (Transparent)
You can edit the 20 pre-set entries (English) to suit your needs. Ctrl-1 to Ctrl-0 and Alt-1 to Alt-0 can be used to insert these pre-set texts in your documents. This sophisticated facility will be very useful to automate many of your routine Tamil documentation acitivities.
Ctrl-1 to Ctrl-0 and Alt-1 to Alt-0 are the keys to use to insert these pre-set texts in your documents. These can be used to insert user-defined Tamil phrases/poems etc. in any external application window (say MS-Word) too. Note that in external applications Ctrl-1 to Ctrl-0 only will act.

Auto-Insertion (Non-Transparent)
You can edit the 20 pre-set entries (Tamil) to suit your needs. You have to press F10 to switch to 'Direct Typing mode' to enter your own Tamil texts. This sophisticated facility will be very useful to automate many of your routine Tamil documentation acitivities.
Ctrl-1 to Ctrl-0 and Alt-1 to Alt-0 are the keys to use to insert these pre-set texts in your documents.

Popup Display in Tamil
You can use Alt-F10 to convert a line or portion or whole of the English text in the text area of your current application to Tamil and get the generated Tamil text shown on a new and separate pop-up window.

Re-Transliterate
You can click on this any time to retransliterate the English text from the start once again. This will be useful if ever a rare synchronisation error occurs. Read  'Known Issues' topic in this context.

Text Area Cursor Positions
Tells you the line number, column position and characters until the cursor position, for both ETA and TTA.  The details for TTA are not corresponding to the cursor position in ETA. Its just based on the current cursor position in TTA. For ex: when cursor position in ETA is 100, the corresponding cursor position in TTA could be 150 but the current cursor position in TTA need not be 150 and could be 5000 and the details are given for ETA’s cursor position of 100 and TTA’s cursor position of 5000. If you want corresponding details, then click on F6 first and then click on this menu item.

ETA’s Corresponding TTA Position  ( Shortcut - F6 )
As you move the cursor in ETA to different positions, the cursor in TTA does not change position correspondingly. This menu item helps for the same. Press ‘F6’ whenever you want to reach the corresponding position in TTA, for a particular cursor position in ETA.

Convert Tamil Text to TAB encoding
SaiMeera is a Tamilnet 99 standard bilingual font. If you are already a regular user of a font of this standard, you can convert your Tamil text (in SaiIndira font in TTA of Azhagi) to this font. Note that formatting in TTA (like bold, center etc.) wont be carried over to the text area showing Tamil text in SaiMeera.
