Azhagi's Addins for MS Excel - Tamil Fonts Converter, as of now - All details hereunder.
The first version of this page was uploaded on 5-Sep-2022. It will undergo further updations at regular intervals, going forward. In other words, I will continue to keep updating it.

Azhagi's Addins for MS Excel (AAE, for short). What is it?

By/With God's Grace, its a new app (containing a suite of modules - Tamil Fonts Converter, Sanskrit Tamil Converter, etc.) for Windows desktops/laptops that has been developed for the benefit of all those who are in need of the same. These modules reside inside MS Excel itself as addins/plugins and thus you can (and need to) operate them from within MS Excel only. Much like the other apps of Azhagi, AAE is also 100% free, for life.

Though it is not a 100% substitute for all the info I have provided in this page, it can definitely give you a very good idea on the core points of this page. So, please do watch.

Is there any other software like AAE?

As far as I know, there is no software of this kind. So, AAE is after all a very humble attempt by me to showcase a different dimension for Tamil/Indic computing. That is all to it. Personally, it is 'futuristic' to me, since I have tried to create these kinds of 'Addins' (AAE and AAW) for the first time and since there are no software like these available so far.

How to Download AAE?

Kindly read this section ("How to avail AAE?") section FULLY. Clear-cut instructions are present therein as to how to obtain the download link for AAE from me.

AAW (short for "Azhagi's Addins for MS Word") is also available.

If interested in AAW, you may please visit AAW's home page. You may opt to watch the video below too. Though it is 'NOT a 100% substitute'^^ for all the info I have provided in the aforesaid page, it can definitely give you a very good idea on the core points of AAW. So, please do watch.

(^^) For instance,
1. AAW is a Unique software. It converts MS Word documents from one Tamil to another with ALL formatting intact (Bold/Italic/Underline, colors, alignments (left/right/center/full), tables, etc. etc. etc.). This is one of the BEST things about AAW's Tamil Fonts Converter. The video does not talk about this. And, as said in the video itself, not all of AAW's addins have been covered/explained in this video; they will be explained in upcoming future videos only.

2. Further, the video wrongly mentions that user has to send me details on his OS, Antivirus software, MS Office version, MS Office bit-ness, etc. None of them are required to be sent to me. As such, just a one-line email to me (requesting for AAW, with confirmation that you have read the 5 sections) was more than enough for me.

Azhagi++ (aka 'anbe sivam'), a standalone app like Azhagi+, is also available.

• This module has not yet been implemented in AAE but it is neveretheless available in AAW already, for those who wish to avail it.

Features overview of the 'Tamil Fonts Converter' Addin module

• The Tamil Fonts Converter Addin can do the following in any open MS-Excel document:
  - Unicode to NonUnicode conversion
  - NonUnicode to Unicode conversion
  - NonUnicode to NonUnicode conversion
  - With ALL formatting (Bold, Italic, Underline, Alignment-L/R/C/J, Tables, Colors, etc. etc. etc.) intact.
  - In a Super-fast and Easy manner.


• For all the following cases:
  - ANY Selected cells in either the Active Sheet or All Sheets
  - ALL the cells in either the Active Sheet or All Sheets
  - From ANY/Default/Specific Unicode/NonUnicode font to ANY/Default/Specific NonUnicode/Unicode font
  - After Unicode to NonUnicode conversion, if at all you wish to, you can convert any of the existing quotes in the document to any of the quotes (usually decorative ones) available in the NonUnicode font.


• Examples:
  - You can make selections in the converter's opening screen in such a way that in a workbook containing Unicode Tamil text in several Unicode fonts (Vijaya, Latha, Nirmala UI, etc.), the converter converts Tamil text in 'Nirmala UI' font alone to 'Ka Aanandham' NonUnicode font specifically. Tamil texts in fonts other than 'Nirmala UI' (Latha, Vijaya, etc.) will be left intact, without conversion.
  - Similarly, you can make selections in the converter's opening screen in such a way that in a workbook containing NonUnicode Tamil texts in several 'Ka' fonts (Aanandham, Virundhu, Yaazh, etc.), the converter converts Tamil text in 'Ka Yaazh' font alone to 'Arial Unicode MS' font specifically. NonUnicode Tamil texts in fonts other than 'Ka Yaazh' will be left intact, without conversion.
  - During any conversion process, the English texts will be kept intact but only in cells as a whole, as of now. English texts intermixed with Unicode or NonUnicode texts in cells wont be kept intact, as of now.


• OPTIONS:
  Kindly experiment by ticking/unticking the following options:
  - Active Sheet Alone
  - Selected Cells only
  You can try combinations of both ticked, both unticked, either one of them only ticked.
  And, while converting, you can select single cell alone and try to convert too.
  You can try selecting multiple cells (say 5) in 5 different Unicode fonts and try to convert only one of them.
  As you can infer from the above, various combinations are possible. Kindly take your own time to test out whatever combinations possible for you and let me know if any of the combinations do not work. Thanks in advance.
  


• NOTE:
  Inter-family conversion is also possible (e.g. Unicode Latha to Unicode Nirmala UI; Ka Brammam to Ka Virundhu) in a 2-step process. I will try to make it straightforward (1-step process) in a later version.
  Simple cases of changing texts in one unicode Tamil font (Latha) to another one (Nirmala UI) is easy to effect manually itself - just select the text and apply a different font. But, what I am referring to are the "not-so-simple" cases. For instance, kindly consider the following:
  Suppose there is a 50-sheets workbook which has cells with texts in multiple Tamil Unicode fonts and suppose you need only Tamil texts in 'Latha' font to be converted to 'Nirmala UI' font. Doing it manually (selecting a cell and changing font) in a 50-sheets workbook would be highly time-consuming.

• Customisable data files
  The first 3 files in the above list of 'Data file' are customisable! i.e. you can edit them to suit your own convenience.
  But, please take time to understand the logic behind these text files so that you edit them correctly.
  Particularly, in the case of the first 2 files, take care that the lines count remain intact (as in the original). That's paramount.

Note: The times (in seconds) I have given above are based on my own Win10 system's configuration. It may differ in your system based on your system's configuration.

Have any of the users checked out AAE's features so far?

Yes, 4 user-wellwishers have checked out AAE so far. They have sent me screenshots of the successful working of AAE in their systems.

Installation is a breeze. No issues in usage, as such

According to user-feedback and my own observations

• Installation is a breeze. Just a second or two it takes to install, after you have read the initial infos displayed.


• Absolutely no issues in starting MS Excel after the installation and seeing the tab and icons thereafter.


• No issues while using the app, as such, except one or two not-so-significant errors (reported by one user-wellwisher) which I will investigate into soon.

Operating system and MS Office requirements

• Win7(SP1) and above. In other words, all of Win7, Win8, Win10 and Win11 are supported.


• MS Office 2007 and above.

OS and MS Office versions in which AAE has been tried out so far, ALL successfully

• So far tested in Win7, Win10 and Win11. Working well.


• So far tested in 32-bit versions of MS Office 2007, 2010, 2013, 2019 and 365. All well supported, as such.


• So far tested in 64-bit versions of MS Office 2010 and 2021. Working well.

Have any users specifically asked for a 'Azhagi MS Excel Addin' in the past?

One of the users has been persistently asking for Tamil fonts conversion for MS Excel documents too (apart from the existing Tamil fonts conversion for MS Word documents in Azhagi+) since the past 4 or 5 years. He did not specifically mention that it has to be a addin but that is how his requirement has got fulfilled finally.

Azhagi's Addins for MS Word and MS Powerpoint possible?

• Azhagi's Addins for MS Word (AAW, for short) aleady exists.
• Azhagi's Addins for MS Powerpoint (AAP, for short) can be done but not in near future since specific requests from users have not arisen so far for AAP.

What is the current version of AAE and will there be future versions?

• Current version of AAE is 1.2.
• Yes, there will be future versions. One can suggest ideas for new addin modules.
• I shall add the user-suggested addin modules in the future versions, as and when my time permits.

How to avail AAE?

At the outset, I presume you are already a user of Azhagi+ (AzhagiPlus, which is a straight download from azhagi.com/store#download page) and you now wish to download/install and start using the Unique and Feature-Rich AAE (Azhagi's Addins for MS Excel) also. Hence, I have not provided any direct download link to AAE in this page, as of now. In other words, I am not in a position make the download link of AAE directly available here, as of now. Checklist: What to do before installing AAE and during/after installation of AAE?

• Before starting to run the AAE installer, I suggest you kindly SAVE all your open MS Office documents (whichever need to be necessarily saved) and then CLOSE all your open MS Office applications (MS Excel, MS Word, MS Outlook, MS OneNote, etc.), before continuing with the installation.


• During installation of AAE app, I suggest you please read well the opening 'License' info and the HIGHLIGHTED (in red) info next, before the actual installation of AAE starts.


• While installing AAE, your AntiVirus application (Windows Defender, NAV, AVG, Avast, K7, etc.) "might" caution/warn you about the installer but that is only quite normal since this is the first time it is seeing the AAE installer. These "mistaken warnings" are called as FALSE positives (an extremely vexing issue for individual developers like me). So, you can proceed ahead normally, informing your AntiVirus warning screen that it is "Okay" for you to proceed ahead with the installation.


• In case of Windows Defender, you need to click 'More info' and then 'Run Anyway' in its first warning screen (if any).


• Mistakenly, if your AntiVirus app does not allow you to download/use the AAE installer at all (OR deletes the installer itself completely), then what best you can do is to read this section and also this one and act accordingly.
• During the installation process, you cannot change the default installation destination path of "C:\Azhagi - God's Own App\Azhagi's Addins For MS Excel\". You shall not change this path after installation too. Sorry that the installation path is hardcoded. I could effect the functioning of AAE only with an hardcoded installation path.


• Once the installation is completed, you will not find any icons in the Desktop or QuickLaunchBar since the addins operate from within MS Excel only.


• So, instead of searching for any icons in the desktop, you just need to start MS Excel as usual and you will find an extra menu item 'அழகி (azhagi.com)' at the top of your MS Excel application.


• Click on that menu item and you will find either 'text links alone' OR 'icons with text links' for both the 'Tamil Fonts converter' and 'Sanskrit Tamil Colorizer'


• If you are effecting conversion/colorisation of an existing important workbook, then kindly PLEASE DOUBLY ENSURE that you have taken a BACKUP of that document before effecting any conversion/colorization/etc. Better to have the backup both in your system's hard disk and in an external hard disk or pen drive.


• Please try AAE in your personal computer only first. Thereafter, you may try it in your office system(s), "if at all" you have the need to install and use AAE in your office system(s) too, and "if at all" your office gives you full permission to use AAE in your office system(s).

AntiVirus applications' FALSE warnings/deletions and the great problems caused by them to individual developers like me

• Please read this - https://www.azhagi.com/helps#SetRightYourAV - to know ALL about what all problems are caused by "FALSE positives" generated by AntiVirus software.


• Sometimes, the AAE installer may be completely deleted by your Antivirus application too.


• All these kinds of behaviour by Antivirus applications are indeed a vexing issue for individual developers like me but nothing much can be done about it unless I spend money (annually) on digitally signing all the software I develop.


• For one's info, it took me nearly 10 days of various activities to see that the installers are acceptable by Windows Defender! How much invaluable time of a developer lost in such activities!

Which AntiVirus software do not pose any issues, as such, with regard to AAE?
What best can be done in case you face issues due to your AntiVirus app?

• As per user-feedback, registered versions of 'K7' and '360 Total Security' (AntiVirus software) do not pose any issues.


• Windows Defender does not pose any issues, as such. It "may" however identify AAE as an unrecognized app in its initial screen. You just need to click 'More info' in that screen and then click the button 'Run Anyway'. Thereafter, it "may" say that AAE is from an unknown publisher. All this is normal. You just need to click 'Yes' and proceed ahead with the installation. That's all. If all these initial warnings have to be avoided, I need to go for signing my software only, which is an annual affair costing a lot. As of now, I do not wish to go for that for an app like AAE which is 100(000......)% free for life. I dont know whether the software industry will ever change to allow freeware developers like me to sign their software for free.


• As far as I can say, in my personal humble opinion, Microsoft's inbuilt 'Windows Defender' application is a more than enough security since Win7 itself. Personally, I have been using 'Windows Defender' only since my Win7 days itself (i.e. since more than a decade), in all my Windows systems.


• However, you are the best judge when it comes to your own systems. If you use and prefer to continue to use external AntiVirus software like NAV, Avast, AVG, K7, etc., then so be it.


• So, if you have NAV, AVG, etc., what might happen? These antivirus applications "may" prevent you from installing AAE. What to do in that case, I have written in detail here - you may please read if and when possible for you and act accordingly.


• Based on what I written in the above link, with regard to the issues posed by AntiVirus software, you (user-wellwishers) may kindly take the initiative (if at all, if at all, if at all you can), to write to the developers of the AntiVirus software developers, mentioning that AAW is totally virus-free (as done by Mr Madankumar here^^, by writing to the developers of Kaspersky Antivirus software that Azhagi+ is totally virus-free).

Easy solutions to issues faced (if any) while effecting conversions

• Well, so far, no major issues have been reported by users who have tried out AAE (Azhagi's Addins for MS Excel)


• If you still face any issues during any of the conversions, please do contact me with samples of inputs and ouputs. But, not before you have written or said "at least" a few words of thanks to the Lord Almighty and a few words of praise to the Lord Almighty. The more thanks and praise you express in your words to the Lord Almighty, the more happy I shall be. Sairam.....


• Please note that the existence of some AutoCorrect and AutoFormat options may cause problems sometimes. So, it is better to untick ALL the Autocorrect and AutoFormat options which you feel or know already that they might interfere with the conversion process.

What is accomplished (with regard to Tamil/Indic computing) via the 2 (as of 07-Sep-2022) addins I have made availale in AAE is just a 'tip of the iceberg'. Much much much more can be accomplished via further MS Word addins. Only sky is the limit. So, I request other developers (esp. youngsters) to get into the Addins world, if at all possible for them, and introduce (m)any other helpful addins in MS Word, MS Excel, etc. which can provide a different dimension to Tamil/Indic computing and be of immense benefit to the society. I am getting old myself (55 years running, as of 7-Sep-2022). So, it will be great if youngsters can take over from here, with regard to Addins.

How I happened to develop these addins?

I have been wanting to do these kinds of Addins ever since a decade or so but because of lack of time, I could not. It is just that an user, in 2021, requested for a way to automate the user's 'Sanskrit Tamil Colorization' work in MS Word. It was God's WILL that, in June 2022, HE wanted me to meet the user's request as an addin in MS Word and see it fructify. Once it got fructified, it was again GOD's will to create an inkling in me to try 'Tamil Fonts Conversion' as an MS Word Addin immediately. I tried and it worked out too. That's all to it. Thereafter, I tried the same in MS Excel and it fructified therein too. But, in all this process, 3 months have gone by now (as of 7-Sep-2022). If I had not done these addins, then Azhagi+'s next version would have been ready by now. That's exactly why I hesitated to try developing Addins all these days because I knew that once I attempt it, it will consume a big chunk of my time. Anyway, having attempted it and seen how helpful it is, it is all immense Divine satisfaction only for me, at the end of the day. I feel the urge now to create more addins in future. But then, that will further delay the release of the next version of Azhagi+. So, I don't know what exactly is going to happen with regard to Azhagi+'s next version. Anyway, finally, I will be flowing along with whatever the Divine Will is, only! Sairam.....

Your suggestions, feedback and testimonials

• Kindly please give me suggestions for what other addins I can make. Anything other than 'Grammar/Spell'checker can be suggested, since I simply do not have time to do a 'Grammar/Spell'checker.


• If you have availed AAE and started using it successfully, then, if and when possible, kindly test out all its features and give me your feedback on every aspect of AAE.

A very humble request - Try out AAE - EITHER to 'Spread its news' OR to 'Give me feedback'

Even if you do not have the need for AAE, if you think you have absolutely no hesitancy to try out AAE (after reading the "How to avail AAE?" section above), then:

EITHER:

• If at all possible for you (no compulsion at all, whatsoever), if and when your time/situation permits, kindly try out AAE and get to know about its features to whatever extent possible for you. Because, if you do so, even if you do not feel the need for AAE or its features, you can still tell about AAE to others who are in need of the same so that many more of the society get benefitted. Thanks in advance.

OR:

• You can try out AAE just to give me 'feedback on AAE' too (to whatever extent you can, on AAE's installation/usage/etc.), so that those users who have the need for AAE can get benefited, once AAE is slowly released to more and more users in future (in whatever ways I decide to release AAE, in times to come).
