That legend of Samudramanthana (churning of the ocean) has great value for you, as you too have to churn the ocean of your heart and win the nectar for yourself. The legend is only a reminder. The heart full of satwa guna (purity) is the ocean of milk. The steady contemplation of the Divine (manana), either as your own reality or as the ideal to be reached, is the Mandara mountain planted in it as the churning rod. Vasuki, the serpent that was wound around the churning rod, represents the senses, emitting poisonous fumes during the process of churning. The rope is held by the good and the bad impulses and both struggle with the churning process; eager for the results which each has set its heart on. The grace of God is the Tortoise Incarnation, for the Lord Himself comes to the rescue, once He knows that you are earnestly seeking the secret of Immortality. He comes silently and unobserved as the tortoise did, holding the process of manana unimpaired and serving as the steady base of all spiritual practice. Many things emerge from the mind, when churned, but the wise wait patiently for the appearance of the guarantor of Immortality, and seize upon it with avidity. That is the lesson of this legend. சமுத்திர மந்தனம் அதாவது பாற்கடலைக் கடைதல் என்ற புராணக்கதை உங்களுக்கு மிக முக்கியமானது; ஏனெனில் நீங்களும் உங்கள் இதயமெனும் பெருங்கடலைக் கடைந்து அமுதத்தை அடைய வேண்டும். இந்தப் புராணக்கதை ஒரு நினைவூட்டல் மட்டுமே. சத்வ குணம் நிறைந்த இதயமே பாற்கடல். இறைவனை உங்களுடைய மெய்யுணர்வாக அல்லது அடையவேண்டிய லட்சியமாகக் கொண்டு செய்யும் மனனம் எனும் நிலையான சிந்தனையே மந்தர மலையையொத்த மத்தாகும். அந்த மத்தால் உங்களுடைய புலன்களைக் குறிக்கும் வாசுகி எனும் நாகத்தை கயிறாகக் கொண்டு கடையும்போது நஞ்சு வெளிப்படுகிறது. தேவர்கள் அசுரர்கள் போன்ற நல்ல மற்றும் கெட்ட தூண்டுதல்கள் அந்தக் கயிற்றைப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு, அவை இரண்டும் விரும்பும் பலன்களைப் பெறுவதற்காகக் கடைந்து போராடுகின்றன. இறவாநிலை எனும் அமுதத்தை அடைய சிரத்தையுடன் முயற்சிக்கிறீர்கள் என்பதை அறிந்த இறைவன் உங்களுக்கு உதவியருள்வதற்கு தானே ஆமை வடிவான கூர்மாவதாரம் எடுத்து வருகிறான். அவன் ஆமையைப் போலவே அமைதியாக யாரும் அறியாதவண்ணம் வந்து, செய்யப்படும் மனனம் தடைபடாமல் பார்த்துக்கொண்டு, அனைத்து ஆன்மிக சாதனைகளின் உறுதியான ஆதாரமாக செயலாற்றுகிறான். மனமானது கடையப்படும்போது பல விஷயங்கள் வெளிப்படும்; ஆனால் அதிலிருந்து இறவாநிலையை அருளும் அமுதம் வெளிப்படும் வரை ஞானியர் பொறுமையுடன் காத்திருந்து, பேரார்வத்துடன் அதனை சிக்கெனப் பிடித்துக்கொள்கிறார்கள். இதுவே இப்புராணக்கதை கற்றுத்தரும் பாடம் ஆகும்.
