What is the difference between 'Trial' and 'Free Basic Version'?
As long as you do not enter any password in the opening password screen of Azhagi, it acts as the FULL Professional version in 'Trial' mode (for 10 days, with some character and time
restrictions). And, we hope you started Azhagi in 'Trial' mode and tried out all its sophisticated features like Direct Tamil Input in ANY windows application, Auto-Transliteration, Auto-Insertion, Pop-up Display, Reverse Transliteration etc. etc. If you enter the basic version password in the opening password screen, then Azhagi starts acting as a full-fledged Basic version. You can type as many pages as you want, save, print and email them. To know the differences between the various versions of Azhagi, visit

How can you directly transliterate/type in Tamil in ALL Windows applications?
The standard/professional versions help you to achieve Direct Tamil Input in ANY Windows application (like MS-Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Outlook Express, Pagemaker, PhotoShop, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail etc. etc.) in 3 different typing modes - Phonetic (i.e. Transliteration - the most popular typing mode), Tamil Typewriter and Tamilnet99.
You can type in two different font encodings:
a) Tscii
b) Unicode
The standard version allows Tscii input only, whereas the professional version allows both Tscii and Unicode input. The standard version provides seamless conversion from Tscii to Unicode, nevertheless.
a) Tscii Input - Directly in ALL Windows applications (possible in Standard version and above)
1. Start Azhagi fully by clicking 'OK' on the opening password screen.
2. Click 'Preferences' menu and see if 'Unicode Input' is ticked. If so, make sure you UNTICK it first.
3. Open your external application (say MS-Word).
4. Change font to SaiIndira. Type one or two words and they will appear in English itself and not Tamil.
5. Press F10 (default hotkey). Azhagi's tray icon will (should) change color to red.
6. Now, start typing in English and they will appear in Tamil and not English.
7. Press F10 again and you can start typing in English as usual. Azhagi's tray icon also would (should) have changed color to its normal greenish-blue.
8. If you wish to change your typing mode from 'Phonetic' to 'Tamil Typewriter' or 'Tamilnet99', right click on Azhagi's icon in the system tray, move your mouse to 'Typing mode' and select the preferred layout.
9. You might face a problem typing 'Sri' in MS-Word. Solution for the same is at http://azhagi.com/help/azummenutools.html.
b) Unicode Tamil input - Directly in ALL Windows applications (Possible in Professional version only)
To effect Unicode Tamil input, as a first step, you should enable Unicode in your system. To know ALL about enabling Unicode in your system and effecting Unicode input or Unicode conversion, click here and read everything in detail, step-by-step.
What is Unicode? Why should one necessarily use Unicode?
Unicode is the Universal Font Encoding Standard recognised by Microsoft for now and the future. If you email/chat/share documents in Unicode Tamil, your WinXP/Win2K recipients do not require any Tamil font at their end to view your Tamil text. With Unicode, you can straightaway start typing in Tamil in any windows application without the need to set/change your application font to any specific Tamil font.
Unicode is
immense power. For instance,
a) You can have File Names in Tamil!
b) You can do Sorting in Tamil (arranging in Tamil Alphabetical order - ascending/descending) in Excel/Access/Word etc.
c) You can also do Find & Replace in Tamil in Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Notepad/Wordpad etc.
d) Search engines (Google, Yahoo! etc.) support Unicode and hence you can search in Tamil itself. For a screen snapshot depicting the same,
e) You can have online forums in Tamil itself - for instance, see
http://groups.google.com/group/illam
Unicode computing is possible at present in Win XP/2K and above. To enable Unicode computing in your computer, you have to NECESSARILY effect some
settings in 'Regional and Language Options'. For more details on how to enable Unicode in your computer and effect
Unicode Input in ALL Windows applications,
click here to read step-by-step instructions, along with screen snapshots [You can also view these instructions offline (but, devoid of snapshots) by starting Azhagi fully, clicking on 'Help'->'Unicode Help' and reading the topics therein fully]. Azhagi provides a sophisticated Unicode 'Bulk Converter' too. With the standard/professional version, you can make use of around 25 FREE 3rd party unicode fonts. For samples and details, see
http://azhagi.com/sai/uniFonts1.pdf. For creating Tamil websites,
free dynamic Unicode (cum Tscii) web-font is also provided by us.
