Devanagari/Vedic - All the extended characters - Sample

What the list of Vedic characters below is all about
  • Text below depicts all Devanagari/Vedic extended characters.
  • The characters have been typed both as standalone characters and also as united with the character स.
  • In other words,
      1st column - Extended character
2nd column - स in conjunction with the extended character
3rd column - Decscription of the 'extended' character.
  • Please note that, as of now, I do not have verbal descriptions for the last 9 extended characters. So, you can consider the code points given itself as descriptions.
  • Wherever a particular character is not depicted properly (for e.g. 'VEDIC TONE RING ABOVE'), kindly consider only it's verbal description for your reference.
  • The dotted circles, wherever you see them (in the list of characters below), are just placeholders. They are not part of the characters. A dotted circle merely indicates that this place will be taken up by a joining character. For e.g., in स᳐ (VEDIC TONE KARSHANA joined with स), the dotted circle's place has been taken up by स.

IMPORTANT NOTE
The following characters have not been included in the list above.
      ॥ - DANDA / purna viram
      । - DOUBLE DANDA / deergh viram
      ः - VISARGA
      ँ - VEDIC TONE CANDRABINDU / anunasika
      ऽ - AVAGRAHA
      ॑ - VEDIC TONE UDATTA / SVARITA
      ॒ - VEDIC TONE ANUDATTA
      ॓ - DEVANAGARI GRAVE ACCENT
      ॔ - DEVANAGARI ACUTE ACCENT
      ् - DEVANAGARI SIGN VIRAMA
The above 10 characters (Danda, Avagraha, Udatta, Anudatta, etc.) seem to be enough for people doing normal Sanskrit work and using Azhagi+ (a 100% free multilingual typing/transliteration software available at www.azhagi.com) one can of course type them. But, for those who do some extra specialized work in Sanskrit, various extended characters are needed. Each one of them has a need to type his/her own set of extended Vedic characters. That is why I created the above list (around 100 of the extended characters) and put them up in this page. And, as of now, every user of Azhagi+ can type any of these extended vedic characters he/she needs too. So, the basic work is already done. i.e. user of Azhagi+ can already type/transliterate ALL the above Vedic characters, whichever ones he/she needs. This facility is a 'first of its kind', as far as I know, and thus will be of immense help to the society.

The 'societal help' requested
The only 'societal help' needed now is for someone (you or a vedic scholar you know or an MA/PhD in Sanskrit you know) to let me know what are the 'most used' of the above around 100 extended characters. This will help me to reorder the above list (1 to 108). i.e. I will renumber the above list from the 'most used' to the 'least used'. In case all the above characters are equally used, then one can let me know the same too.

So, kindly look into the above characters till the very end (upto 57353) and kindly let me know what according to you is the most used 10** Devanagari/Vedic characters, in order. For e.g. your list could be:
    --
    1. VEDIC TONE PRENKHA
    2. VEDIC TONE KARSHANA
    3. VEDIC TONE DOUBLE SVARITA
    4. VEDIC TONE TRIPLE SVARITA
    5. VEDIC SIGN TIRYAK
    6. VEDIC TONE YAJURVEDIC AGGRAVATED INDEPENDENT SVARITA
    7. Code point 57349
    8. COMBINING DEVANAGARI SIGN AVAGRAHA
    10. VEDIC TONE TWO DOTS BELOW
    --

(**) If it is more than 10 (say 50), please give the list for the same. If it is less than 10 also (say 5), just give that list. I just need your choices. That is all. Your choices can be based on the Sanskrit work you have done/doing OR just based on your general reading/writing knowledge of Sanskrit. If you do not know what is the first most used character, 2nd most used character, etc., that is not a problem. Just mention the most used 5 or 10 or 20 or 50 in any random order, whichever you feel that you have frequently come across, based on the level of knowledge you have acquired in Sanskrit by far. As mentioned already in this page, you can OF COURSE ask any Vedic Scholar or an MA/PhD in Sanskrit you know too, to provide his/her help on this 'societal request' of mine so that many more of the society get benefitted in a better manner.

For one's information
I do not know to read/write/speak Sanskrit. I can only read Hindi to an extent (but may not understand all the words I read). So, my knowledge of Sanskrit is only from the perspective of a software developer. My main focus is on the Sanskrit characters, swaras, conjuncts, etc. - providing easy means for the users of my software (Azhagi+) to type them using English itself.

Talking to some persons (who know normal Sanskrit), I get a sense that in general it is not that easy to talk to the veterans in Sanskrit and Vedas for my societal cause, without taking prior appointments, etc. But, due to certain chronic health problems (not discernible externally), I generally do not move out of my home. So, taking prior appointments and meeting any pandits or vedic scholars in person is not feasible for me. If any knowledgeable person is kind enough to provide his/her help over phone/email/etc. itself, keeping in mind that their help is for a free and purely social cause, that is what is most welcome.

Kind regards - Viswanathan (Author of Azhagi free apps for Windows/Android)
